Greetings and welcome to the East-West Law Blog. Our aim is to provide information and commentary on law and lawyers in Ukraine, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
This Blog has its roots in the Fulbright Program and the Russia/Eurasia Committee of the American Bar Association Section of International Law. I was a Fulbright Scholar in Kharkiv, Ukraine, in the fall 2005. On one of my many return visits to Kharkiv, I was introduced to Tetyana Gavrysh, the Managing Partner of the Inyurpolis law firm in Kharkiv, and Olena Kibenko, the firm's Senior Partner. I later joined the firm as its Of Counsel.
Ekaterina Sjostrand, a Russian native and a barrister in London who is also qualified to practice in Russia, and I met at the Fall Meeting of the ABA Section of International Law in London in October 2007. Ekaterina, Tetyana, and Olena subsequently met at a law conference in Moscow.
The four of us recognized that there is a need for lawyers, judges, and legal educators in Russia, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, the United States, and other countries--east and west--to visit among themselves and to exchange news, views, and information about the law, lawyers, and legal education. By creating this Blog, we intend to provide a place for these exchanges.
We are just getting started, and we invite you to join us. Please feel free to comment on any of our postings. If you would like to contact me, please write to me at ckelley.christopher@gmail.com.
